Civil Engineering Technologist - Permanent Full Time

Reporting directly to the Engineering Project Manager, and ultimately the Manager of Engineering, the Civil Engineering Technologist applies strong engineering knowledge in order to plan, design, and coordinate the construction and rehabilitation of the County transportation network. They develop cost effective design solutions and identify opportunities for improvement of County infrastructure, and assist with the preparation of procurement documents by developing contract specifications, detail engineering contract drawings, figures, maps, and quantity estimates for Request for Proposals (RFP), Request for Quotes (RFQ), and tender documents. They provide onsite construction supervision, as well as schedule and direct material testing and geotechnical consultants. As project timelines vary, this position requires candidates to be available to work overtime, evenings and/or occasional weekends required.

What you’ll do

• Assist with the technical review of engineering submissions received from private developers, utility providers etc.
• Administer the County’s responsibility related to the underground utility protection program with Ontario One Call including managing the County database, correspondence with applicants, and providing on-site locates for County owned buried infrastructure.
• Work with the Engineering Division to plan, design, coordinate, and oversee the construction and rehabilitation of County transportation network.
• Prepare detailed cost estimates in support of the annual 10-year Capital construction budget
• Develop detailed design drawings and technical contract specifications for RFQ, RFP, and Tender documents
• Assist in securing approvals from Conservations Authorities, Ministries, Provincial, Federal, etc. to enable assigned projects to proceed.
• Responsible for on-site construction supervision, including liaison contractors, consultants and residents.
• Perform pre-construction topographic surveys and construction layout using Geographic Positioning System (GPS) RTK and total station to provide centreline offset stakes, grading and culvert installation stakes
• Coordinate required quality control inspection activities including scheduling and testing of construction materials with the assigned geotechnical consultant
• Establish construction project deficiencies and work with the Contractor to establish corrective measure for final assumption by the County.
• Prepare detailed project records and as-constructed plans to be integrated in the County’s Geographic Information System (GIS) data base
• Supervise and manage the day-to-day activities of summer students including construction inspection, traffic data collection, surveying and construction layout.
• Stand in for the Engineering Project Manager when required
