Keep A Jingle In Your Pockets This Holiday Season
The holiday season can be the most wonderful time of the year, but between lights, decorations, cooking and guests, energy costs can snowball.
“This year, Dufferin County’s Climate Action team would like to give you the gift of energy savings,” says Sara MacRae, Climate and Energy Manager, Dufferin County. “Unlock savings, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase comfort in your home this winter with tips for any budget!”
Improve energy efficiency for $0
- Turn down the thermostat by one or two degrees when expecting company
- Unplug appliances and devices when not in use to avoid phantom power
- Open curtains on south-facing windows to naturally heat your home
- Set your ceiling fans to rotate clockwise to help re-circulate warm air
- Keep the lid on your pots. Food that is covered cooks more quickly
Improve energy efficiency for under $25
- Make the switch to LED lights to use up to 75 per cent less energy
- Check and replace your furnace filter to keep your system running efficiency
- Seal air leaks around windows, doors, baseboards, and outlets
Improve energy efficiency for under $100
- Switch to low-flow fixtures on showers and sinks
- Install water heater blanket (*Water heater blankets should not be installed on gas water heaters)
- Use a smart power bar to avoid waste energy from devices and appliances
- Use a timer to automatically turn your holiday lights on and off
Pick-up your free home energy kit at Grand Valley Public Library, Orangeville Public Library, or Shelburne Library starting December 15, available while supplies last. Your kit, valued at $30, is designed to help you save money, improve indoor air quality, increase comfort and reduce climate change causing emissions.
