Zero Waste Tips for Earth Week (April 21 to 27)
Choose to Reuse Monday
How can you help reduce plastic pollution? Choose to reuse! Switch to items such as reusable bags, bamboo utensils, stainless steel straws, and coffee mugs. By choosing to reuse, you help keep plastics out of the oceans and landfills.
Textiles Tuesday
The average Canadian buys 70 new pieces of clothing annually. Only half of what is bought is used, while the rest is left unused or thrown out. Textiles contribute to over 10 million tonnes of waste in landfill in North America, of which 95 per cent could be reused or recycled.
Keep textiles out of landfill by donating unwanted clothing, shoes, bedding and more! Check out the Clothes’ing the Loop Map Tool to find businesses, donation bins and organizations accepting donations near you.
E-Waste Wednesday
Do you have old electronics piling up at home? Drop them off at a Household Hazardous and Electronic Waste Event! Visit dufferincounty.ca/waste to find an event near you. Dufferin County residents can attend any of the scheduled events.
You can also recycle e-waste for free year-round by visiting the GFL Transfer Station located at 473051 County Rd. 11, Amaranth.
Take It Back Thursday
Do you have unwanted items, such as appliances, clothing, dishes and more? Take them back to a participating vendor for reuse, recycling, and proper disposal! Download the Take It Back Directory to find vendors near you. https://rb.gy/rxoyt8
Food Waste Friday
On average, Canadian households waste $1500 worth of food annually. Most of this food waste consists of healthy fruits and vegetables that could have been eaten at some point but were thrown away instead. Visit dufferincounty.ca/waste to download resources that can help you buy only what you need, preserve what you buy and love your leftovers!
