Museum Programming Assistant

Reporting to the Education Programmer, the Museum Programming Assistant will provide assistance for programs and tours scheduled to take place during their term of employment. This will include delivering group tours, workshops, and other onsite programming. They will work collaboratively with the museum staff deliver programming from start to finish (set up, facilitation, and clean up). They will also be responsible for the upkeep of the museums interpretive garden, interacting with visitors, and sharing stories and historical information online via social media platforms and in-person through programs, workshops, and outreach activities.

What you’ll do

  • Researching and developing content for programs based on local needs and local history
  • Craft historical interpretation of the museum's grounds, exhibitions, and heritage garden to deliver tours to visitors and group tour bookings.
  • Assist in the planning of programs by developing material lists and assisting with the drafting of budgets
  • Use Canva to create posts and stories with photos and videos for social media posts.
  • Assist with the facilitation of any tours
  • Update the garden maintenance plan to include new section focused on Eastern Woodlands Indigenous culinary andmedicinal heritage. Research additional plants to be included in this section.
  • Helping with any school program bookings – running learning and activity stations (e.g. historic games, log cabinexploration).
  • Attending community events with other staff to represent the museum and deliver engaging storytelling-themed activities.
  • Opportunities to lead activity sessions related to workshops and activities for children and families (instructions/demonstration, historical interpretation)
  • Other duties as assigned

What you’ll bring

  • Experienced with Microsoft office suite
  • Social Media platforms (Instagram, facebook, twitter) and development tools (Canva)
  • Passion and strong interest in history, storytelling and committed to excellent customer service
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills
  • Experience conducting historical research
  • Strong writing skills and attention-to-detail
  • Creative and innovative thinking
  • Good ‘people-skills’ – friendly, courteous, and helpful. Experience working with a range of age groups is an asset
  • Reliable, responsible, and takes initiative to help others
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to multi-task and move between projects
  • A valid “G” Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Ability to work outside in a range of weather conditions, including Summer heat
  • Ability to perform physical labour (kneeling, crouching, bending), including lifting up to 25 Ibs.
  • CPR and First Aid Training is an asset
