Heavy Equipment Mechanic (Full Time)

The County of Dufferin sits on the fringe of the Greater Toronto Area, about 100 kilometres northwest of Toronto. It is largely a rural county with three urban settlement areas. Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Heavy Equipment Mechanic performs mechanical maintenance on all equipment, purchases supplies and tools, and directs other staff in routine maintenance activities. They are also responsible for maintaining maintenance schedules to ensure each vehicle is kept in top condition in an effort to prevent unexpected repairs and minimize out of service time.

What you’ll do:

  • Perform and manage preventative maintenance and repair of tandem truck snowplow equipment, backhoe, road grader, tractor, excavator, pickups and other various equipment.
  • Repair hydraulic pumps, valves hoses and salt/sander controls.
  • Procure all vehicle maintenance supplies and tools required.
  • Build and install small parts and add-ons to equipment.
  • Direct assigned staff in routine maintenance on equipment including greasing, service, welding, etc.
  • Perform annual Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) vehicle inspections.
  • Maintain CVOR records as stipulated in the Ontario Highway Traffic Act.
  • Maintain maintenance schedules and records for all vehicles and ensures all warranty coverage is obtained when required.
  • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, decrease out of service events and streamline work processes.
  • Carry out other duties as assigned.

What you’ll bring to the position:

  • Grade 12 education or equivalent.
  • Completion of 310T (Truck and Coach Technician). This requires completion of two-year College plus apprenticeship. 310S (Automotive Service Technician) would be an asset.
  • Five to seven years’ experience in the repair and upkeep of heavy trucks and road construction equipment.
  • Working knowledge of vehicle/equipment diagnostic software as well as electronics and hydraulics.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience with work order systems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Organizational skills with attention to detail and the ability to meet tight deadlines.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the working environment and trade.
  • Ability to provide own mechanics tools is considered an asset.
  • Valid Class DZ driver’s license.

The annual salary range for this position is $71,240 - $83,324 (Grade 7 on the 2019 Salary Grid) and is based on a 40 hour work week.
