Rent Geared to Income (RGI) Units

Rent Geared-to-Income (RGI) assistance is also known as subsidized housing. RGI assistance is for eligible households who meet the required income and asset levels. Rent for tenants is based on their income and is available to those who have applied to move into rental units where this type of subsidy is offered.

Affordable Rent Units

In Affordable Housing, the rent is based on approximately 80% of the market rent for the community. Affordable rent units are for eligible households who meet the required income and asset levels. Rent for tenants is based on their income and is available to those who have applied to move into rental units where this type of rent is offered.

Market Rent Units

Market rent units are units with fixed rates and is not based on amount of income or income source. Market rent units are for eligible households who meet the required income and asset levels and is available to those who have applied to move into rental units where this type of rent is offered.

Rent Supplement Units

Provides housing with rent-geared-to-income rent. This is delivered through community partnerships with private sector landlords. The normal landlord/tenant relationship exists and the landlord is responsible for such things as rent collection, maintenance, repairs and services that exist with all tenants in the building.

Supportive Housing

The March of Dimes Canada operates six supportive units for adults with physical disabilities who require full assisted living housing. To find out more about these units such as eligibility, rates, wait list or applications, please call March of Dimes at 519-925-1048.

Services and Housing In the Province (SHIP) operates supportive units for adults with diagnosed mental health and/or addictions by providing housing and support services. To find out more about eligibility, wait list, or applications, please call Dufferin County at 519-941-6991 ext. 2110.

Portable Housing Benefit

A type of Housing Allowance that is funded through the Provincial and/or the Federal government. It is a monthly amount of money to help eligible households pay rent. This option is most suitable for people who want to find their own housing, or who do not want to move but need additional help to pay monthly housing costs. The allowance is paid directly to the individual, so it can be used in the private market.
To apply for the Portable Housing Benefits, you need to submit a HAD application and be eligible on the Housing Access Dufferin centralized waitlist.

Co-op Housing

Co-operatives are governed by their members. They are democratic communities where the residents make decisions on how the co-operative operates. The tenants also sign an occupancy agreement which is a legal contract between the co-operative and the new member that sets out what obligations the new member has in exchange for the right to live in the unit, and what obligations the co-operative agrees to fulfill for the member as a resident.

Non-Profit Housing

Non-profit organizations offer community-oriented, cost-effective rental accommodations. These buildings are managed by a board of directors comprised of volunteers. Tenants within this system typically fall into two categories: those who pay rent based on their income levels, often referred to as rent-geared-to-income (RGI) housing, and those who pay rents that are aligned with the current market rates in the area.
