If you live in rural Dufferin, you will require a civic address or "emergency number". This 6-digit number uses a grid system to pinpoint the location of your driveway - within 10 metres!
All roads in Dufferin County have been assigned a unique, two-digit number. The first two digits in an emergency number represent the road the property is on – an even number means it is an east-west road, an odd number means it is a north-south road.
All roads are divided into sections and are numbered from 1-9. The third digit in the emergency number represents which section the property is in.
The last three digits indicate the distance – in kilometers – from the beginning of the section to the property entrance. If the last digit is an even number, the entrance is on the south side of the road. If the last digit is an odd number, the entrance is on the north side of the road.
This number is imperative to emergency services being able to locate your property quickly and easily, day or night. The number is also used for school bus pick-up, courier delivery, utilities, and other services that require a specific address.
Note: The location of new entrances, existing or proposed, are to be approved by the Municipality (or the County). Proof of such is to accompany the application for an emergency number sign. The number does not legitimize the existence of a driveway or other entrance to a property.
Please note that emergency numbers cannot be given out verbally. Signs will only be provided upon payment of the fee.
Signs are made at the Dufferin County Operations Center in Primrose when an application is submitted along with payment. Both the application and payment can be completed on-line. If you would like a post with your emergency sign, choose the ‘post’ option when making payment.
Urbanization is growing in every Municipality throughout Dufferin County. Homes on smaller lots are being built off private roads by Developers. These homes must have a highly visible address number. Dufferin County manufactures short-blade signs, with up to 3 numbers for developments. Our signs are not mandatory, you may choose any type of house sign. Developers are welcome to call our office to discuss at 519-941-2816 extension 2600.
