Dufferin Rail Trail

Recreational use of the Rail Trail is governed by the County Forest and Rail Trail consolidated by-law.

At this time, the gates at the Rail Trail entrances are only wide enough for regular ATVs and smaller side by sides. Traditional side by sides will not fit. This restriction will be addressed in upcoming Capital Works plans however the change will proceed slowly.

The Rail Trail is the property of Dufferin County and we have agreements for motorized use with the local ATV and snowmobile clubs. These clubs contribute to maintenance and perform enforcement with the assistance of the OPP. Only members of these clubs are allowed to use the Rail Trail.

To ride your ATV on the Dufferin Rail Trail, you must be a member of the Dufferin Grey ATV Club. Contact them by phone at 519-266-3559 or info@dgatv.ca.

To ride your snowmobile on the Dufferin Rail Trail, you must be a member of the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) as well as have a valid displayed Snowmobile Trail Permit. Visit the OFSC website to purchase a trail permit.

To ride your dirt bike on the Dufferin Rail Trail, you must be a member of Dufferin Rooftop Recreational Riders Association. You can contact them at DufferinRRR@gmail.com.

Yes, you can walk your dog on the Rail Trail; however, they must be leashed or under your control. Dogs are not allowed to run at large on the Dufferin Rail Trail. Please make sure you bring doggy poop bags. We ask you to please pick up after your dogs.

Yes you are welcome to ride your horse on the Rail Trail.

Yes you most certainly do. All persons cycling, horseback riding, or using a motorized vehicle on the Dufferin Rail Trail must wear an appropriate helmet.

Properties on both sides of the rail trail are private. Under the Ontario Trespass to Property Act, signs do not have to be posted for these land uses to be trespass offences:

(a) that is a garden, field or other land that is under cultivation, including a lawn, orchard, vineyard and premises on which trees have been planted and have not attained an average height of more than two metres and woodlots on land used primarily for agricultural purposes; or

(b) that is enclosed in a manner that indicates the occupier’s intention to keep persons off the premises or to keep animals on the premises. R.S.O. 1990, c. T.21, s. 3 (1).
